The Advent of the Backboard

The first backboards were introduced in 1895 [four years after the game itself], though their purpose had nothing to do with helping players align shots. Most gyms were much smaller than today’s facilities, so balconies were relied on for extra seating. Basketball fans quickly noted the upper level front row seats were conveniently located within reach of the goals. All the exuberant supporters had to do was reach down and presto, they could block the shot of an opponent, or give the home team a balcony assist. To put an end to the folly, a heavy wire gauge was installed behind the goal, effectively blocking fans from touching the ball or interfering with movement of nearby players. The backboard became a staple in most games by 1896, and carried a fixed size of four by six feet [the current NBA standard is 6’ x 3’5”].
